Short Description: Anorexia Nervosa: (Emotionally Starved for Love)
Anorexia Nervosa is an eating disorder where an individual (most often females in adolescence) intentionally starves themselves to achieve a "perfect body image" that is severely underweight and not at all "beautiful" or healthy.

Causes: Anorexia Nervosa is "self inflicted" punishment. Intentionally, the anorexic eats very little and often induces vomiting and uses laxatives or diuretics improperly to achieve life threatening levels of weight loss. This eating disorder is often the direct result of an individual's desire to control their bodies because they feel out of control in all other areas of their life. Ironically, those who end up starving their bodies into submission often gain the ultimate control by focusing others on their own self induced struggle between life and death.

Anorexia Nervosa can be an occupational hazard inherited from past lives. In medieval times, those in religious orders expressed devoted to Jesus Christ through an ascetic lifestyle that often included starvation ("fasting"), self-inflicted torture ("mortification of the flesh"), and sensory deprivation ("self-denial"). These type of behaviors were applauded and those "successful" in taming their flesh to death were revered as holy martyrs. That is why behaviors, like eating disorders, are so hard to break because of deep seated unconscious beliefs that this self destruction is "good for the soul" and helps in it's "salvation" (see "Holy Anorexia" by Rudolph Bell).

Symptoms: The signs of Anorexia Nervosa due to long standing malnutrition are unmistakably reflected on the bodies of it's "victims". Anorexics are underweight by greater than 25% of the recommended weight for their height and frame.

Anorexics have blotchy or yellow skin, dry, lackluster hair (and/or hair loss), cavity ridden teeth, brittle bones, and low blood pressure. They are frequently tired, anemic, constipated, and weak in their muscles. They are often sick "catching" illnesses easily because their immune systems are weakened.

They are often cold due to loss of fat tissue and "bundle up" in warm clothing even when temperatures are mild. Female anorexics almost never have menstrual periods while male anorexics have difficulty in getting erections. Emotionally, they are often withdrawn, depressed, anxious, and highly critical or intolerant of others.

Advice: Anorexics are usually suffering from a past life resonance which causes the body to believe that it still must be caught up in the struggle for survival. Individuals become compelled to drop weight and give a variety of other explanations for it (as in they need to "look good", to "be perfect", to "control out of control lives", etc).

The reality is that there is usually a past life personality (often one from a life of abuse or religious "self-abnegation") "starving for attention and love" as well as for the healing that knowledge of the past brings. If anorexics would not be open to such knowledge, the best that their loved ones can do is to shower them with unconditional love (see the Loving Kindness Meditation).

When they are ready, loved ones should invite and encourage the anorexic to do exercises which will open them to greater levels of self love (see the Reiki Heart Anchor and Mirror of the Loving Soul exercises). The worst thing that loved ones can do is look away and pretend as if nothing is happening… while the anorexic's life slips even further away... when it does not have to.

After Effects: Anorexia Nervosa is a life threatening condition that is often not taken seriously by others around the person until their life is actually threatened. Even if it is healed in body, mind, emotions, and spirit, the former anorexic's system will be permanently weakened. Particularly because the individual has failed to love themselves for so long, they are at increased risk for heart related diseases.

Case History: A woman was the middle child in a family where the father was an acclaimed scholar and the mother was a respected healer. Her elder brothers were highly intelligent and were on their way to promising careers while her younger sister attracted attention with her wit and her beauty. The woman felt left out in her family of "shining stars" and wondered "what was wrong with her" because she felt herself to be neither brilliant nor beautiful.

When someone casually remarked on her attractive figure, she became determined to improve upon it. At first, she received praise - for she had been chubby - but the praise turned to worry as the pounds - and the life - melted away from her. So she "hid" her problem under mounds of clothes but soon the loss of weight in her face revealed her problem. By then, it was too late. Her heart gave out under the strain of years of starvation and she died… leaving a grief stricken family behind her.
